ELKTON, MD. – County Executive Alan McCarthy announced today that Lauren Levy has been selected as the new Health Officer for the Cecil County Health Department. Laurie Humphries has been the Acting Health Officer since Stephanie Garrity announced her retirement in 2018.

“I am privileged to welcome Ms. Lauren Levy to this exponentially important position in Cecil County,” stated County Executive McCarthy. “I am confident that Ms. Levy is exceptionally prepared to lead the charge on tackling our county’s most important public health challenges: addiction and mental health, homelessness, communicable diseases and environmental well-being.”

Ms. Levy holds a Master’s in Public Health from Columbia University and Juris Doctorate with a concentration in Health Law & Policy from the University of Maryland School of Law. She obtained her Bachelor’s in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Her unique blend of studies in these disciplines, and her advanced education, made Ms. Levy a stand out among all other candidates.

Over the course of nearly two decades, Ms. Levy has accumulated broad and varied professional experience in the public health and legal fields, including her position as Managing Director of the Law & Health Care Program with the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, and as a Research Associate in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

“It is an honor to be appointed as Health Officer for the Cecil County Health Department. CCHD has a strong reputation among stakeholders at the local, regional and state level and I am excited to be joining this team of dedicated public servants,” said Levy. “I am grateful to prior Health Officer Stephanie Garrity and Acting Health Officer Laurie Humphries for their outstanding leadership of the department. I look forward to working with our community partners to improve the health of the residents of Cecil County.”

Ms. Levy and her family currently reside in Towson and will be relocating to Cecil County in the coming months. Ms. Levy is slated to begin her new role on May 22, 2019.
