Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway


Chesapeake Country is small town America at its best! Steeped in early colonial history, crossroad communities, rural farmland, wildlife refuges, and maritime recreation along the Chesapeake Bay, this Byway offers a diversity of nature, history, working landscapes, and scenic vistas.
Herr's Snack Factory

Free guided tour of the factory, with warm potato chip samples provided. Herr's gift shop and "Chipper" Café located in Visitor Center. Reservations suggested.

Converted 19th Century grist mill displays major works of art by three generations of Wyeths and other American artists. Hours: 9:30 - 4:30 daily.
Franklin Mint Museum
US Route 1, Franklin Center, PA
Exhibit of 20th Century icons includes Princess Diana's famous beaded gown, Jackie Kennedy's faux pearls, etc. Exhibits showcase artists and collectible themes. Hours Mon-Sat 9:30 - 4:30, Sun 1 - 4:30.

Hagley Museum and Library

($) - One of America's renowned outdoor museums, and site of the birthplace of the DuPont Company; Gunpowder Mills, worker's community, exhibits, gardens, special events, and the original 1803 du Pont family mansion. Interesting to all ages; Hours: Daily Mid March-December 9:30 - 4:30, Jan-Mid March weekends 9:30 - 4:30.
Historic New Castle
A charming colonial town, founded by the Dutch in 1651, is steeped in history. Museums, shops, and restaurants on the Delaware River.
Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library

($) - Explore Henry Francis du Pont's American country estate. The 175 room mansion houses the world's largest collection of American antiques and decorative arts - more than 85,000 objects. Tour the museum  and see the exhibits and gallery. Stroll the gardens and new children's Enchanted Woods.Hours: Mon-Sat 9 - 5, Sun Noon-5. (Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years).

Havre de Grace Decoy Museum ($) - On the banks of the Susquehanna River, this museum houses one of the finest collections of working decoys from the Chesapeake Bay and around the country. Also hosts events. Open daily 11 - 4; 215 Giles Street, Havre de Grace; 410-939-3739.

National Wildlife Refuge with beautiful scenery. Hiking trails, woods, open fields, fishing from the bridge, and a public boat ramp. Visit observation decks with magnificent views! Rock Hall area.
