PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release June 24, 2009Cecil County Government Partners with Cecil College for Career Discovery Camp Event Elkton, MD – The Cecil County Department of Public Works is working in partnership with Cecil College for a Career Discovery Camp Event for thirty middle school students on Friday, June 26, 2009 at the County Administration Building in Elkton. Cecil College received a BRAC Workforce One grant from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation to develop a five-day program to introduce local students to careers that are available in the transportation and logistics field. The students will spend one day with Cecil County government officials. Debbie Klenk, Dean of Career and Community Education for Cecil College, said, "The partnership was formed with Cecil County government to introduce students to the great job opportunities that are coming to our area due to the BRAC initiative, not just in transportation and logistics, but related fields as well. The Public Works staff worked hard to put together a presentation that would get the students to start thinking about academic and personal choices they will be making for their future".
Staff from the Public Works Roads, Engineering and Construction, and Development Services divisions will provide "hands on" work groups focusing on highway and bridge construction, stormwater management, road signage safety, and modern surveying techniques using the GIS system. Students will be provided information on the impact the design and installation of road signs have on public safety, and the importance of engineering skills to highway and bridge construction, which is the foundation of our transportation system. They will build a rain barrel to gain an understanding of the importance of storm water management to the environment. John Mettee, Vice President of Frederick Ward Associates will provide a demonstration on the advances in technology that have been made in property surveying with the development of GIS computer satellite mapping systems. Students will have an opportunity to use the County's GIS program to discover the benefits it provides to engineer consulting firms and other related businesses.
"Cecil County government is excited to be hosting this event in partnership with Cecil College. Our staff will have an opportunity to provide education and demonstrate the importance of our role in providing services to our citizens", stated President Brian Lockhart.
