2010 National Association of Counties Achievement Award
Elkton, MD - The Board of Cecil County Commissioners is proud to announce the County has been awarded a 2010 NACo Achievement Award for the Volunteer Fire Company Vehicle Replacement Grant Program.
The Board of County Commissioners recognized the value of the services provided by the volunteer fire companies, and adopted a resolution establishing the Volunteer Fire Company Vehicle Replacement Grant Program in 2006. The program provides one million dollars ($1,000,000.00) in public funds annually to assist with the acquisition of ambulances, fire trucks and other apparatus used in the suppression of fires and emergencies to replace aging and antiquated equipment.
Since 2006, thirty essential vehicles have been replaced, which has increased the ability of the fire companies to recruit and retain dedicated volunteers who protect the property, health, and welfare of County residents. Commissioner Tome stated, "Volunteer fire companies provide a vital service to our residents that the County would have to supply if these organizations did not exist. The grant program is one way we can support their efforts to ensure our residents receive professional emergency services."
