2009 Cecil County Recycling Award Winners Announced

Elkton, MD - The Board of County Commissioners of Cecil County is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 Cecil County Recycling Awards.  This is the fifth year that the Board of County Commissioners has recognized municipalities and private firms for excellence in recycling and waste reduction.  

Signature Waste Services was named the "# 1 Residential Recycling and Refuse Hauler".  This award recognizes the private residential refuse hauler with the highest recycling rate, which is defined as the percentage of material that is recycled as opposed to being landfilled.  Signature Waste Services recycled over 4,151,000 pounds of material.   

Waste Management was named the "# 1 Large Commercial Recycling Hauler".  This award recognizes the large private refuse hauler with the highest recycling rate for waste generated within Cecil County.  Firms serving Cecil County businesses and institutions, who haul more than 10,000 tons of waste per year, are eligible.  Waste Management recycled over 2,068,800 pounds of material.

Junkbeegone.com is the winner of the "# 1 Small Commercial Recycling Hauler" award for the third year in a row.  This category recognizes the small hauler having the highest recycling rate.  Firms serving Cecil County businesses and institutions and who haul less than 15,000 tons of waste per year are eligible for this award.  Junkbeegone.com specializes in single stream recycling pickup for businesses and recycled over 66,120 pounds of material.   

Elkton Recycling was named the "# 1 Maryland Recycling Act Metal Recycler" for the second year in a row.  This category recognizes the firm recycling the greatest quantity of white goods (refrigerators and other appliances) as defined by the Maryland Recycling Act.  Elkton Recycling recycled over 7.1 million pounds of white good.   

Elkton Recycling was named the "# 1 Non-Maryland Recycling Act Metal Recycler" for a third year in a row in recognition of its recycling of 3.6 million pounds of non-white goods scrap metal.  This category recognizes the firm recycling the greatest quantity of miscellaneous scrap metals that are NOT covered by the Maryland Recycling Act.   

IKEA Wholesale received the award for "# 1 Recycling Business in Cecil County".  This award goes to the Cecil County business that recycles the greatest quantity of materials.  IKEA recycled over 8.5 million pounds of material, including metal, plastics, cardboard, paper, fabric, wood, and other materials.

The Town of Perryville earned the title of "# 1 Recycling Municipality in Cecil County" by recycling over 2.3 million pounds of materials.   

Special Recognition Awards were presented to Union Hospital and Perryville Cold Storage for their efforts to promote recycling and waste reduction in Cecil County.  Union Hospital was recognized for instituting single stream, electronics, and composting recycling programs at their facility, and for supporting recycling at all their charity events.  Perryville Cold Storage was recognized for instituting a food waste reduction program, which along with recycling has reduced their waste by ninety-five percent. 

Public Works Director Scott Flanigan stated "Congratulations to all the winners and our thanks for supporting the County's recycling programs, which yield many environmental benefits, including saving raw materials and conserving landfill space."  

Members of the Board of County Commissioners presented certificates to the winners at the July 20, 2010 meeting of the Board of County Commissioners.  President Lockhart stated, "The Board of County Commissioners is proud to recognize the recycling award winners for their effort to reduce waste in our landfill, and for supporting the County's recycling program".
