Cecil County's Recycling & Environmental Programs are managed by the Department of Public WorksSolid Waste Management Division. Our recycling program was instituted in 1990 after the Maryland Recycling Act was passed which requires all Maryland Counties to recycle a specified amount of their waste. The Solid Waste Management Division currently manages many recycling and environmental programs and events. Some environmental programs are aimed at removing a certain material, or special waste, such as hazardous waste from the waste stream and does not necessarily recycle the material. Some special wastes are of particular concern, such as Sharps, and are removed from the waste stream to protect human health.
Environmental & Recycling programs save valuable landfill space, remove contaminants from the waste stream, generate revenue to support our programs, and assist our Department of Public Works to fulfill our mission to contribute to the health, safety, and quality of life of Cecil County residents.
