ELKTON, MD. -- A memorial wreath and plaque will be dedicated to Cecil County fallen heroes of the Vietnam War on Tuesday, November 5th at 11 a.m. at the County Administration Building in Elkton.

The wreath was presented to the county by the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall at a ceremony in Easton, Maryland on June 3, 2018. County Executive Alan McCarthy and Council President Bob Meffley accepted the wreath as the names of the nine soldiers who died in the war were read.

Council President Meffley stated, “The ceremony in Easton was very moving and heartfelt. Viewing a smaller version of the memorial wall brought memories about those who served their country in Vietnam and those who never returned.”

Cecil County fallen heroes include:

SP5 David Nelson Clayton, Perryville

LCPL Gregory Scott Copenhaver, Port Deposit

PFC Marshall Franklin Freng, Elkton

PFC Donald C. McAllister, Jr., Elkton

CPL Michael Duane Rolfe, Rising Sun

W01 Ray Levi Reynolds, Rising Sun

SP5 George Robinson, Elkton

PFC Thomas Valentine Ruff, Jr., Elkton

SP4 Marion Neal Tapp, Port Deposit

“Our veterans served their country in the spirit of protecting liberty, and made great sacrifices for all of us. It is important that we always take the time to honor them,” added County Executive McCarthy. “This wreath will forever be a symbol of remembrance for the nine brave soldiers from Cecil County who were lost in Vietnam.”

The memorial will be placed in the lobby of the County Administration Building so visitors can view as they enter the local government offices. Family members of the honored veterans have been invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
