Horst Dairy Farm Now Protected by Cecil Land Trust's Fair Hill Rural Legacy Area Program

Post Date:07/30/2019 11:54 AM

HORST FAMILY 2019

The Horst Family dairy farm, near Farmington, is the latest Cecil County farm to be permanently protected by the Cecil Land Trust’s Fair Hill Rural Legacy Area (FHRLA) program.

The 200 plus acre farm was the first to take part in Cecil Land Trust’s “pay for success stream restoration project.” The project involved improving 8,125 linear feet of stream channel to reduce sediment and nutrient run off and the planting of 24.8-acres of riparian buffers. The easement will permanently protect the stream and the surrounding land.

Susan, Sharon and Vernon Horst are planning on passing the farm operation on to the next generation. The easement will help the Horsts achieve their goal. The family has been investing in the dairy industry for quite some time. They build a new slatted floor bar for 200 cows in 2003, rebuilt their bank barn this past spring and a new heifer barn is currently being planned. The Horst family is very proud of the farm life they have built and plan to pass on. When asked about what their favorite part of living on the farm was both Mikayla and Tiffany Horst responded, “the fresh milk!”

The Horsts’ interest in the future can be gauged by their willingness to reduce sediment and nutrient run off through stream restoration and a healthy soils program. These programs promote no-till planting and cover crops which help protect the soil for generations to come.

Cecil Land Trust is proud to be able to help local Cecil County farmers achieve their goals by using state and local funding that improve soil and water quality, benefiting everyone.
