ELKTON, MD. -- Who’s best at tackling Cecil County’s toughest problems? Maybe you are! Cecil County Department of Community Services’ 55+ Volunteer Leadership Program (55VLP) is about to get underway and now is the time to get involved. 55VLP is looking for 30 volunteers, age 55 and up, to take on two of the County’s challenges and concerns: opioid and substance abuse, and economic opportunity.

In this 7-week call-to-action course, 55VLP team members will attend workshops in May-June of 2019 throughout Cecil County. Each workshop will feature frontline experts from partner agencies who will outline the details surrounding the issues that are preventing many Cecil County residents from achieving their best. The program will meet on Fridays beginning May 3rd, from 9AM to 12PM (to accommodate for the Memorial Day weekend, that week’s session will be held on Thursday, May 23rd). Light lunch will be provided. The last session is on June 14th and will include a graduation and participant presentations.2019 55VLP FLYER

Each workshop will engage all volunteer colleagues to learn more about the issues, while getting to know one another and sharing ideas and experiences. Participants will then work together to design real programs and solutions.

Now in its second year, this unique volunteer program is a way for Cecil County to benefit from the knowledge and experience our older adults have acquired in their own families, careers and lives.

The ultimate goal is to develop new strategies to take on our County’s most serious challenges while offering a satisfying experience for our seasoned volunteers as they contribute to important local causes. Though many of the issues facing Cecil County aren’t unique to Cecil County, many of the solutions are.

“55VLP has been a life changing experience for me. From the first meeting, my ‘washed-up, nothing to offer’ thinking was replaced with hope, belief I could make a difference and determination to do so,” expressed Susan Blake Hanna, who participated in the program last spring.

55VLP is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service through a Senior Corps/Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) grant.
