ELKTON, MD. -- Eighteen participants in the inaugural class of the 55+ Volunteer Leadership Program (55VLP) received certificates of recognition signed by the County Executive and members of the County Council on Thursday at a ceremony held at Cecil College’s Elkton Station.
The free 6-week Volunteer Leadership Program for adults ages 55 or older was designed to cultivate mature leaders across the county to address the challenges of homelessness, opioid addiction and disconnected youth.
Led by Krista Gilmore, Volunteer/Community Resource Coordinator from the County's Department of Community Services, volunteers participated in an innovation lab where they discussed current challenges and how they are being handled in Cecil County. Local and national experts offered training on assessment, project planning and implementation. Participants formed groups and used their knowledge to formulate local solutions and community-based responses. Some of the group project themes included mapping and connecting resources, developing a financial literacy program, changing attitudes about addiction and family mentorship.
County Executive Alan McCarthy presented the certificates and applauded the group for their efforts. "I am greatly encouraged and profoundly impressed that everyone in this class not only recognizes the problems that we face in Cecil County, but that you are so deeply committed to helping us all work towards solutions," he said. "It is the sharing of your life experiences and knowledge that will make the most difference and I look forward to seeing the progress you make with your ideas going forward."
This year's 55VLP participants include: Mary Ellen Beck, Stanley Bensley, Elaine Boyle, Nancy Crawford, Danny DeMarinis, Thelma Elliott, Marcella Gates, Martha Gill, Alena Givens, Susan Hanna, Paul Harjung, Carol King, Kathie Koster, Mark Koster, Glenda Lewis, Sharon Lolow, Jeanne Parry and Regina Sewell.
55VLP was funded by the Corporation for National and Community Services through the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) grant.
