ELKTON, MD. - The Cecil County Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office, will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 6PM in the Elk Room of the Cecil County Administration Building, 200 Chesapeake Blvd, Elkton, Maryland, for the purpose of soliciting public input regarding the County’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) which is currently being developed. This meeting was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, 2018 but was cancelled due to inclement weather and so has been rescheduled.
A cross-functional group of representatives from state, county, and municipal law enforcement, public works, and other agencies; local fire companies; and other interested stakeholders is in the early stages of developing the Cecil County SHSP. The purpose of the SHSP is to identify actions that can be taken to reduce the frequency and severity of motor vehicle crashes, including those involving bicyclists and pedestrians, which occur on roadways in Cecil County. There were 30 fatalities on roadways in Cecil County in 2017.
The purpose of the public meeting on April 17th is to receive public input to assist in developing the plan. The public meeting will run from 6-6:50 PM that evening; the County Council will conduct a legislative meeting in the Elk Room beginning at 7PM. At the SHSP public meeting, members of the SHSP Committee will provide an overview of the SHSP development process and will then open the meeting up to receive public comment. In order to afford everyone who wishes to comment an opportunity to do so, speakers will be limited to three minutes each.
The public meeting will provide citizens and other stakeholders with an opportunity to share areas or locations of particular concern as well as their thoughts and ideas on how to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries and otherwise improve roadway safety in Cecil County. The input gathered at this meeting will be incorporated into the draft plan, which is scheduled to be completed in summer 2018.
Persons wishing to provide input, but who are not able to attend the public meeting, may do so in writing via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or letter addressed to Director of Public Works, Cecil County Administration Building, 200 Chesapeake Blvd, Suite 2400, Elkton, Maryland 21921. For best consideration, such written input should be received by 5PM, Friday, April 20, 2018.
